Question:

Can contact lenses be worn just for reading?

I wear glasses for reading but find it hard as I have just started night school and when I look at the board I have to take them off and then put them back on to write (as everything goes fuzzy in my glasses at distance..

This is very annoying and I wondered if it is possible to get contacts just to wear on these nights?

  1. Actually, they do make bifocal contact lenses. You will have to see your optician for a prescription.

  2. i dont believe so. ut you never know id make a meeting with your optomotrist and ask him what they can do for you.

  3. I think its available.

The best person to answer your questions is your optician

  4. You could put contact lenses in to help you read, but if they do not have a bifocal component you would be swapping one problem for another.  You would then be unable to see in the distance just like when you are wearing your reading glasses.  Bifocal contact lenses might work, but are a bit of a compromise to your vision.  Only 80% of the population can adapt to them and they work for only 80% of the activities you wish to pursue.  Unlike bifocal glasses (which are much larger and are in a stationary position in front of your eye) in most cases (as with soft lenses), the contact lenses must move when your eye moves.  Therefore, you'll be looking through both the distance and near correction simultaneously.  The brain has to learn to focus on the clear portion and filter out the blurry portion of the image it receives.  Not all of us can do this.  Hence the80% success rate.  You may wish to get a narrower pair of reading glasses that allow you to look over the top to see the blackboard without having to remove them (that is if you don't wish to consider bifocal glasses).

  5. I have fit many people with occasional use contacts.  As long as you don't mind taking them in and out they are easy enough to fit.
