Question:

Can contacts let you open your eyes underwater?/How do you see underwater?

I see in a lot of movies where they film in saltwater, the actor/actress can open their eyes underwater without problems. Do they have special contacts they wear or something? What do they use and where can you buy them? Also is there any way to train your eyes to get used to fresh water/salt water? I want to start doing free diving. I hate goggles. I'm almost or am legally blind (I'm not sure because I have to go get a new prescription soon) so I have to have contacts or I can't see two feet in front of my face. I can do really well in chlorine water. Anyway how can I swim without goggles and keep my vision decent enough to see in front of me? Please help. Thanks.

  1. There's no such thing as "pressue can keeps your contact lense in place". The water will just wash away your contacts once you open your eyes in the pool. The actor and actress also faced a hard time when they open their eyes underwater, but as the professional actor and actress they have to do it. And sometimes even the scene is in the sea, they flimmed underwater shots in a tank, so they don't have to face the salt water. There's also no protective contacts in underwater, only goggles can protect your eyes in the water.

Wearing contact lense to swimming pool, prepare the risk of contact lense being wash away. Another worst case it, the contact lense might being wash to the up or back side of the eyeball, it's lucky you can get the lense back to the right place, but if not you have to consult a doctor as fast as possible. Eyes might be effected by the desease in the water and fungus as they stored in the contact lense.

Even I have very bad eye sight, but when taking my life saving course, I still not allowed to put on my goggles. So I'll just do everything blindly. Just swim more without goggles on and you'll train your eyes to get used to the fresh water.

  2. Only practice and no contact lens you would loose it thou.

  3. If you want to see underwater and you wear contacts, you will need to use goggles.  Opening your eyes underwater with contacts in most likely will cause them float out of your eyes.
