In Pittsburgh, PA they can carry whatever type of gun they want, as long as it is an approved minimum caliber and meets the department standards. In Emsworth which is a Pittsburgh municipality, there is a black cop who carries a Desert Eagle .50 in his bag to show em' who is boss when the heaters get pulled out. Don't want to be on the business end of that. Be like watching Dawn of the Dead as the complete head comes flying clean off.

They cant carry machine guns, rpg, sniper rifle, luger, and ak 47, smg.

They only carry M16 (found in the trunk) A beretta, and a tazer

Generally, they can only carry ones that are approved by their department - and that's usually for consistency in training.

my dad is a NJ cop, and he said they ( his department ) have to carry the issued guns. he carrries his own pistol off - duty, but on duty all he has is a sig - sauer p229 .40 caliber pistol, 12 guage riot gun ( black shotgun ) mase / taser. he said some departments have ak -47's in the car instead of shotguns. he also said some departments, only  few, can use their own pistol for duty, as long as they are legal and meet requirements. imagine having a .50 AE caliber desert eagle!!! i hope this answers your question - nick
