yep- I use acrylic craft paint.  Its cheap, and you don't have to prime it first. 100's of colors....

Yes, and it will look better too! Paint it any color you want, just don't try chalkboard paint or anything.

You bet just paint with a latex paint and prime first.  You can even use chalkboard paint or magnet paint.
