can corn stalks be used as feed for pigs.....i can run them through

a shredder......and throw in some ears also to mix in with them

  1. The fact that livestock will will eat the ears and leaves first leads some folks to believe the stalks are worthless.  Not so.  Your pigs need more than a straight diet of stalks but if they are fresh the pigs will eat most of them, especially if you chop them and throw in some ears.  Corn stover (stalks and leaves) are a sometimes overlooked valuable source of livestock feed.  It is 4 to 8%  crude protein and has up to 50% total digestive nutrients, similar to an average Fescue hay.  However, the food values, and appeal to the animals, start to drop rapidly after about sixty days from harvest.  


  2. Really good source of Roughage for most Livestock.

  3. There is precious little food value in corn stalks.  They might eat them if they get hungry enough but they won't do well on them.
