  1. Normally it's not dangerous unless the horse is chewing on something covered with lead paint. Sounds like your horse is bored. Be a responsible owner and get him out of his stall regularly.

  2. Yes it can. When horses crib they are actually swallowing air not breathing it creating air in the stomach which would then lead to colic. When horses get colic they tend to not want to do anything. If your horse is cribbing I would reccommend getting a cribbing collar. They don't harm the horse it just prevents them from cribbing. Colic can be very dangerous, and if a horse is cribbing on a new barn's wood or freshly stained wood they could inhale/ swallow toxins.

  3. Its not dangerous unless the horse is ingesting large amounts of what its cribbing on. If he's chewing on wood they have sprays you can put on it to make it less appealing for the horse. Think about installing a jolly ball in his stall to keep him busy or a mineral salt brick. If you use a jolly ball just hang it about face level and coat it with molasses and he'll get that idea. Also try to give him an hour of good exercise a day, alot of horses crib out of boredom and not getting enough outside time. Does he have pasture access? maybe you should consider letting him have extra pasture time or social time with other peoples horses to keep him happy.

  4. Yes it is dangerous and could lead to death.

They can get colic and ulcers and cause breathing and movement problems. They generally start doing it because they are bored and some think it is genetic. Ive heard it is very hard if not impossible to break but some can break their horse of the habit by keeping it else occupied or using a cribbing collar.

  5. Colic is a possible complication from cribbing.  So, no, cribbing itself will not kill your horse, but it can lead to colic, and colic is a leading cause of death in horses.

Here's an article I found that may help you.

Colic in babies is very different from colic in horses.  They are two different conditions that happen to have the same name.  In horses, colic is more than just a bad stomach ache.  It means that something has gone drastically wrong in it's digestive tract.  In many cases, colic is fatal, or can only be corrected with emergency surgery.  There are many causes for colic: eating sand, eating moldy hay, a blockage.  In some of the worst cases, the intestines themselves are twisted into a knot, causing intense pain.  This website may be a good starting place in your research into colic.  http://www.infohorse.com/horsecolic.asp

  6. Cribbing is completely different from colic.

Colic is the leading cause of death in horses.

Colic is a stomach ache. It's caused by many different things.

Cribbing is when the horse swallows air just right so that it triggers a "high" of adrenaline.

It's not fatal all by itself, but swallowing air can make them feel full so that they have no interest in nutritious food.  Poor nutrition is a bad thing.  I've seen bad cribbers actually mal-nourished because they aren't eating enough.

Which brings me to addiction.  Bad cribbers will ignore feed in order to get their next "fix".  Not good.

To crib, a horse has to bite something.  What ever they bite can break off and damage the horse to the point they die.  (splinters from wooden stalls can damage the mouth, stomach, etc.)

It's RARE but babies can die of colic.  If something is or goes wrong with their stomachs or intestines, they can die from it.

    Cheers.
