Can cutting the points off of cactus needles damage the plant?

Question

I have several hundred Peruvian torch and i want to begin some grafting experiments, however the needles are heinous. I mean i know I'm going to be cutting the top clean off the cactus, but will the needles heal in the same way as the main stalk?
