Question:

Can dairy be non-cow "oriented"?

I mean, according to wikipedia:

A dairy is a facility for the extraction and processing of animal milk—mostly from goats or cows, but also from buffalo, sheep, horses, or camels —for human consumption.

Non-dairy creamers typically contain sodium caseinate, a milk protein (casein) derivative that does not contain lactose and is not considered a dairy product. Other common ingredients include corn syrup and vegetable juice solids. Some creamers are based on soy candels rather than on milk fat.

And, from wired.com:

• Sodium caseinate: Casein is a protein found in cow’s milk, thus making this nondairy product off-limits to vegans. Officially, it’s kosher, but don’t go mixing it with meat. (Note to self: no more ground beef in your coffee.)

What I'm looking for is non-dairy that is not taken from milk.

Any opinions anyone?

  1. yeah. there are any number of mammals. goats are common for milking.

shortcut- eggs arent dairy, look it up.

  2. What about Eggs?  They are sold by Dairies cause Eggs are considered dairy eventhough they are from chickens not cows!   Dairy mainly refers to cows but it's more a term for certain foods that come from animals without having to kill the animal!  Vegans think we shouldn't have anything that comes from animals!

  3. not unless it's soy products, there are lots of soy alternatives. cows happen to be the main part of dairy production.

  5. If it's dairy, it's from a cow.

Just because a product is considered "non-dairy" doesn't mean it's without animal ingredients.  Coffee whiteners and soy cheeses are often made with casein, a milk protein.

You can enjoy non-dairy milks like soy milk, rice milk, almond milk, hemp milk, oat milk, and lots of others... these typically don't contain any animal product whatsoever.

Oh, and consider an alternative soy milk to Silk brand... Silk is owned by Dean Foods, a huge dairy distributor.  When you buy Silk, you're supporting the dairy industry.

  6. Dairy refers to cows, however, there are goat milks and cheeses, which are not cow related, obviously.

  7. Dairy actually encompasses any animal that gives milk that we use for human consumption. Cows, goats, buffalos and even sheep in some regions.....

  8. Your question is a little garbled here.

There are soy creamers out there that are suitable for vegans, if that's what you're asking.  Silk makes the most notable ones, but you can find other brands online or at a natural foods store.

There is soy ice cream and soy cheeses (but many contain casein, so check the label).  Tofutti makes soy sour cream and soy cream cheese.

If you're looking for animal milk that's not from a cow, many natural foods stores might carry those.  But if you're old enough to be typing on a computer, you're old enough to have been weaned long ago.
