  1. An extinct volcano is one which is no longer active and hasn't erupted in historical times.

It is possible for a volcano that humans THINK is extinct to erupt again. Of couse if it does then it means that our classification of that volcano as extinct would have been incorrect. The problem is that there are lots of volcanoes that have very long repose periods between eruptions. For humans these repose periods are long enough that we think that the volcano will never erupt again.

    Example of extinct volcano

    Kilimanjaro (Tanzania)

Some volcanoes lie dormant for thousands of years before erupting again.

Mauna Kea (Hawaii) is considered dormant, as is Mount Rainier (Washington State)

Fourpeaked volcano in Alaska erupted in 2004 for the first time in 10,000 years. Geological records show volcanoes in Hawaii may be dormant for one million years before reactivating.

  2. yes,  there are no real dead volcano's just dominate which means they are sleeping.and if there is a shift along the plate boundaries it can become active again but that rarely happens

  3. no

  4. An "active" volcano is a volcano that has had at least one eruption during the past 10,000 years. An active volcano might be erupting or dormant.

An "erupting" volcano is an active volcano that is having an eruption...

A "dormant" volcano is an active volcano that is not erupting, but supposed to erupt again.

An "extinct" volcano has not had an eruption for at least 10,000 years and is not expected to erupt again in a comparable time scale of the future.

I think you mean extinct, and that means that it is not expected to erupt again.

  5. Volcanoes are classified as active, dormant and extinct.  I have no knowledge of a volcano being referred to as dead.

If you mean dormant, then the answer is yes.  A good example of this is Mt. St. Helens.  That volcano had been classified as dormant from 1857 until it was reclassified as active due to the 1980 eruption.

An extinct volcano is one that has not erupted for thousands of years. Sometimes it is hard to tell if a volcano is dormant or extinct. They will be listed as dormant until vulcanologist's think it unlikely that there will no more eruptions.

That being said, scientists do make mistakes.  So it is possible for a volcano to be classified as extinct and then erupt at a later date.  The most recent example is Fourpeaked Mountain in Alaska, which prior to September 2006 is not believed to have erupted since earlier than 7994 BC.

  6. It depends on the location of the volcanoes. Extinct volcanoes in Hawaii are not likely to erupt. Starto volcamoes like Mount Fuji are said to be extinct as it has not erupted for some million years. Some volcanoes may have not erupted over thousands of years may erupt and cause a massive destruction. So it is not possible to claim whether a volcano is dead by dating its last eruption. For example yellowstone erupts at intervals of 2.1million years to 70,000 years ago.
