Can defending champion Luke Donald win the Match Play Championship and a major this year?
Luke Donald will be defending his title at the Accenture Match Play Championship, scheduled from February 22 to 26, at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain Marana in Arizona.
The most frequently asked question is: Can he really win the title this year?
Yes! Donald has ample chances to start his 2012 season by securing the title of the World Golf Championship.
This event is huge and all the top-ranked players are in the field. However, most importantly, Donald is the one who can be the proud winner of the title.
His performance and commitment is enough to make him the best. He is confident enough to win his first title of the year. The most appealing part of this tournament is its hefty purse of $8,500,000.
If we look at his last year’s performance at Accenture Match Play championship, he successfully recorded his debut WGC win and earned a whopping $1,400,000.
Similarly, he was the most successful player of 2011. He won six titles on the European Tour and four on the Professional Golf Association Tour.
On the other hand, he also achieved the titles of the European Tour Golfer of the Year, PGA Tour Player of the Year, Byron Nelson Award, Vardon Trophy, PGA Tour leading money winner and European Tour Race to Dubai winner.
The glories have not yet completed. Donald's name will surely be written in golden letters for being the only golfer in golf history to lead the money list ranking of both the European and PGA Tours.
Recording multiple victories is really an impressive job. However, on the other hand, he has not won any major title so far.
The current World No. 1 is still lagging behind and wants to secure a win at a major championship since he turned professional in 2001.
"Since I first turned pro, the goal was always to win majors, and that hasn't changed," Donald said. "I certainly think my game is getting to a point where a lot of people say you want to peak for majors".
He continued, "I feel like if I continue to improve the way I've been doing, and I have been improving working as hard as I have, that no matter what kind of game I come to any tournament with, including the majors, I'm going to have a chance to win".
He added, "I'm excited about the majors. I've gained a lot of confidence from last year, and I'm looking forward to the challenges of Augusta in a few months".
Donald is focusing more on winning a major tournament, as it will help him retain his number one position in world rankings.
The month of April is scheduled to stage the Masters. Donald said that he is confident to defeat his rivals by displaying an amazing performance.
However, having high desires and remarkable performances in 2011, does not clearly confirm his win at the upcoming mega tournament.
Defending the title needs extra effort. Competition always increases year by year, and only impressively high scores can benefit the defending champion to win again.
He needs to show some extra efforts while performing at the sensational site of the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain Marana, in Arizona.
On the other hand, he is failing to show his professional game since January, 2012. He only played two tournaments in total and was unable to impress with his game.
Truly speaking, there are ample chances for the Englishman to be on top of the leaderboard. All he has to do is deliver his best and focus more to be under par on most of the holes at the five-day WGC event.
