but the type of carbon it forms depends on the conditions. it can form graphite, diamond or coal, or it just forms seperate carbon atoms in the air.

Yes, diamond can be melted into liquid carbon and then recrystallized back into diamond. Diamond melts at pressure 100,000 atmospheres (which is about the 1/10 of pressure in center of Earth) and temperature 4200 C.
