My big (overweight) belguim sheperd loves apples and now it seems melons to is this ok?

I know not to give him too much human food as he has a delicate tum - he was a homeless persons dog for the first 2 years of his life, so is used to any kind of food but we do have to limit it to get him to slim down a little (actually, by quite a lot)

So i just need to know will the odd but of melon be ok?

  1. What kind of melon? If the rind is toxic to humans, it is to dogs, too. Stick to feeding him the flesh, and it'll be a great once-in-awhile treat.

  2. to james' answer you can give him turkey but theres not any need to cook it, a dog wouldnt eat cooked turkey in the wild, just raw. and it doesnt have to be a treat. we give our dogs tripe and raw mice, chicken legs/breast/neck, anything raw and meaty. its what they would be eating in the wild not dog biscuits or tinned food. they also get healthier whiter teeth ect. just some helpful advice.

oh and you can feed it melon rinds lol.

  3. I dont think so. Any human food i give to my dog is bad. i jog with my dog everyday so he and i can stay healthy.

  4. I had a dog who loved to eat watermelon rinds.  He would beg for them whenever I ate melon.  He was a working sled dog until his 13th year and lived to 17 years old.  A 12 year old dog I have now loves apples.  He eats the drops from under the trees and other than some soft stools when he eats too many he has never had any problems from it.

Melon rinds are not toxic to humans.  They are tough and flavorless but totally harmless if eaten.
