    Ok so i'll help you out a bit more.

    Philips DVP642 will play divx ( a version of avi)

    Specifically, most modern dvd players will play mpeg-4 files, which you can create from avi files.  I have done it, but it is complicated and requires several programs, and a lot of time.

    For how to to do this, just search google "avi to mpeg-4"
