Can dvds bought from america be played on dvd players in Europe?

i was thinking of ordering dvds off play.com, and some i really wanna get from America are availabe, one's that aren't out here in Europe. So if i was to buy them would they play like normal dvds? what's this region 1 deal with dvds? i saw somewhere that american ones can play on region 1 dvd players? if so then how do i check what region my dvd player is??

a region is a area of which the dvd was manufactured to help stop Chinese knockoffs from popping up. The only way you could play American dvds is to buy a region free player from someplace like ebay as most electronics stores dont carry them

The other option is to connect your computer to your TV, then run AnyDVD software. It will strip the region codes for you and allow you to play discs from anywhere.
