Can eating vegan be considered a lifestyle experiment?

I need your help with my vegan blog. It's a lifestyle experiment... I am eating vegan for exactly three months, starting on July 4th. Will you help me? Could you go to my web site and add comments, advice and recipes?

  3. Here we go with another one. Why do you people WANT to be veggietarians. I am a natural one, I didn't chose this, I simply hate the taste, the texture, the everything about meat. A little chicken is OK, but come on people. Yeah, many vegans and what not are plenty healthly, but taking dairy and meat out of your diet will more likely harm you. I right now have an amino acid imbalance because I don't get enough protein. I strugal to get it, beans, eggs, seeds, I hate it. It is totally natural for us to eat meat. If we didn't, how could we of made it through the iceage? I guess it is better for the environment though. I don't know, all I know is that just eat a good deal of local(the freshest possible...in your backyard) fruits, veggies, seeds, etc. and don't stress yourself out.

    Oh, yeah, the dairy companies put dairy in the food pyrimid just to raise their profit. Don't buy into that bull $hit that three glass of milk a day is good for you, it's not!

  5. As a vegan I would like to add a few thoughts for you to consider:

    Have you consulted a nutritionist/read up on vegan nutrition? Don't get me wrong it is easy to be a healthy vegan, but like any other diet you need to be aware of what you eat. If you are making the jump straight from omnivore it is possible that you are unaware of many fantastic plant-based sources of protein, calcium etc. (not assuming, just want to check).

    Also, by looking at your blog, the list of exercise and weight records... I am assuming this "lifestyle experiment" is part of an effort to loose weight. While trying to become healthier and fitter is a admirable thing to do, you have to remember that veganism is a lifestyle, not a diet. Firstly, It is perfectly possible to gain weight on a diet free from all animal products. If you are serious about loosing weight my first suggestion would be to throw away the deep fryer you used to crispen up that tofu. Secondly, unlike the word vegetarian (which applies just to diet) veganism is a lifestyle and implies a moral concern for animals.

    Eating a plant-based diet is just part of a vegan lifestyle, we also do not wear leather, silk or wool, buy cosmetics tested on animals or containing animal ingredients, support forms of entertainment that exploit animals (e.g. horse racing, circuses, rodeo).

    If your "lifestyle experiment" is purely a dietary one I would urge you to either call yourself a "strict-vegetarian" rather than a vegan. Strict-vegetarians also abstain from all animal products in their diet but do not carry through this commitment to their everyday life.

    I am not trying to restrict veganism to some exclusive club here but the very definition of the word requires a commitment to a compassionate lifestyle.

    I also realise it may be difficult to change your blog set up and title now you have started. Perhaps you could include a few words at the start explaining that other vegans are such due to their commitment to animals. You could even include links to organisations such as vegan outreach for anyone who is interested.

    Also, just on a side note... do you eat honey? If you are abstaining from animal products for health reasons than you may find it acceptable to eat honey; however, as its production exploits/maims/kills bees it is most definitely NOT vegan. As are other "healthy" products which may contain hidden animal ingredients such as whey, casein, gelatin etc.

    Best of luck on your quest to becoming healthier, and if I misread the situation and you are vegan due to true concerns over the way animals are treated in today's society... I apologise and congratulate you on your commitment to live a compassionate life :)

  6. well one of my friends is a veagan and she does stuf well, she buys her own type of food, but personally i couldnt give up dairy or meat for the life of me!!!
