I have recently been diagnosed with an enlarged, "floppy" bladder caused by my bladder not emptying itself completelyy. The treatment my doctor has prescribed is self-catheterisation. Does this entail any hazards? Will my bladder eventually shrink back to its normal size?

  1. During self catheterisation you should be careful to

    1. Take necessary sterile precautions

    2. Use the lubricant gel

    3. Use the catheter of the correct size

    and

    4. use the proper method of insertion of the catheter.

But if you get symptoms of a urine infection a culture of urine has to be done and the correct antibiotic taken.

If there is a passage of blood it may be due to injury to the urethra resulting from the catheter and should be brought to the notice of the doctor.

The return of the bladder to normal can occur if you are not too old and the emptying of the bladder without allowing distention is maintained until the doctor advices you to stop

    I am a medical doctor.
