If you've been convicted and sent to jail in America do you lose your right to vote?

  1. No, you cannot vote or own a gun, among other things.


  2. Only if you are a felon.

  3. Ask an attorney that question once, and was told it depends on length of sentence.

  4. It depends on the state in which they live.  When a person becomes a felon - they lose most of their civil rights (the right to vote).  

    Some states have made this forever.  Other states have them lost while they serve their sentence including probabation and parole.

  5. Yes you do lose your rights. To be able to vote again requires that you hire an attorney and have your rights restored.
