Can ex-mercenaries become police officers?

Let's say, hypothetically they worked for Blackwater in Iraq. Would LE agencies view them as being similar to members of the US military? Or is there a taboo associated with mercenary forces?

Thanks

  1. Blackwater are bodyguards, you being a former bodyguard would actually be beneficial on your resume if you trying to be a cop.

  2. your chances would actually increase. Blackwater has been known to train police officers and other LE agencies. Blackwater operatives are former military, as far as the taboo factor everyone has a different opinion on mercenaries, but mostly negative.

  3. If you haven't broken any laws, I don't see why not.  Seeing as how companies like Blackwater for the most part, only hire former military members I can say the following:

Being a "Veteran" of the US Military, you would get 5 points on your civil service exam

Being a "Combat Veteran" of the US Military, not to be confused with combat seen as a "Mercenary" you receive 10 points on your exam

As long as you have no criminal background, bad credit, and are in good shape you should be good to go with no bias shown either way.

    Hope this helps!

  4. Yes. There's no law prohibiting any person who has no criminal or administrative liability to become a police officer. If he was a former mercenary and he has never been indicted of any criminal or civil offense, then he is qualified to become a police officer. This is however subject to the accomplishment of the requisites for police applicants recruitment procedures. On the otherhand, as members of Blackwater, they are considered to be civilians working as defense contractors. Some of their jobs are similar to the military but frankly speaking they are not part of the US military. The word mercenary is passe.
