can eye doctors tell if you have high blood pressure (even if youve only had it for like half a year?) or have maybe recently gotten diabetes or anything like that. no i have not been diagnosed with either but i have checked my bp at school and its usually in the 140s-160s/90s-100s and diabetes runs in my family. i dont wear contacts or glasses or anything, just a regular check up. and i have no idea what to expect i would just like to know if they can figure out other things like that at the check up

Judy B, could you take a look at my question?  It involves Optical health. I would really appreciate it if you did ! :) http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...

  2. High blood pressure and diabetes can cause changes in retina of the eye.  However, the changes do not occur in every person, may take years to show up and may never show up.  The same changes occur in a number of diseases. If the eye doctor sees those changes, he can only know something may be wrong, not what is wrong.  If seen, the eye doctor will refer you back to your family doctor for further testing.

If you want to know if you have high blood pressure or diabetes, you need to see your family doctor, not an eye doctor.  Your blood pressure is high for someone your age.  Who checked the blood pressure at school?  The school nurse?  If so, ask the school nurse to refer you to your family doctor or clinic if you don't have a doctor.
