I have 2 female fancy rats they are appox. 14 inches long counting their tails. Meaning they are about full grown. I'm thinking about getting a new cage for them just because I can and I think they need more space area. Now when I go to petsmart.com or petco.com they don't have many rat homes to choose from. When I do a small animal check for homes tons of farret homes come up. I'm wondering can my ratties live in the farret homes?

  1. Probably not. Try googling rat cages.

  2. well my friend has 1 fancy rat and it lives in a ferret cage. but if theres two then it would depend on the size of the cage. andi think yes it would work.

  3. get a ferret nation cage model 141 or 142. google it. they sell it everywhere

  4. yes as long as the bars arent too far apart and make sure they arent made opf plastic.

Remember:rats can squueeze through smallish hole areas

  5. If a rat can get it's head through the bars, it's whole body will follow.

So, look at your rattie's heads.  Pick a cage with appropriate sized bars.

I've seen a full grown rat walk through the opening in a soda can!!!  It was a squeeze, but it didn't cut itself on the sharp sides.

  6. Go to ferret.com ... We have really good friends that own 8 rats that they keep in a huge ferret cage with no problems whatsoever... and they own 5 cats.  The rats love it.  It is also really easy to clean.

  7. They can live happily in a ferret cage. They love the space. Females may be small enough to slip through the bars so you may need to get some wire mesh to wrap around the cage also. If the spacing is 1/2 - 1 inch they should be okay.

  8. Ferret cages are usually very good for using for Rats.. they are big and have lots of levels..

here is a great RAT link that will give you some more info....

  9. Ferret, bunny and guinea pig cages are the only size I would consider for 2 or more rats.  That is, as long as they are mostly full-grown.  A baby, or even an adolescent can easily slip through the bars.  My baby boy was too big to squeeze through the bars of his ginea pig cage, or so I thought!  He was squeezing through areas that I thought a mouse would have a tough time with.

If the bars are too far apart, you might want to consider getting chicken wire and tying it (with wire) around the cage.  I have a bunny cage with strategically cut pieces of chicken wire covering the entire cage.  I raise my baby rats in it and no problems yet.

  10. Ferret cages are great, but if they can fit their head through the bars, they can probably squeeze their whole body through and escape. I also recommend the Ferret Nation(best prices at www.ferret.com). But if the bars are too far spaced apart, don't get it. Or you could try covering it with mesh wire, which is what I did with my ferret cage for my rats.

  11. they can. it depends on the cage size that u choose or the type. some cages can hold rabbits, ferrets, chinchillas, etc. some cages are meant to hold lots of animals that size.i suggest u check out the cages at petco because they have more variety.
