  1. I can't see Roger going out early in a Grand Slam. No matter how out of form he may be.

Of course Roger has the ability to win but is his head in the right place?

The US Open is a while away yet and there are still events to be played. A lot can happen between now and the start of it.

I think Federer may continue his poor form for the duration of the year. However I think with time to reflect and get himself up for the task of returning to no.1, I think and hope he can come back next year in style.

For the good of tennis Federer needs to believe he can do it. We can't lose such a talent prematurely.

  2. I seriosly doubt he will knowing that he hasnt won a grand slam tournament this year.  I think maybe Nadal or Djokovic will win the tournament.

  3. Ofcourse he can. Its going to be a very exciting tournament....

  4. I think he can. He  will definitely have to be totally aggressive, determined and he will  need to work on his forehand and cut down on his unforced errors !!!!!!! Go Federer.......................

  5. Very good question.  I guess it's not very creative, but still a great question because it is what everyone is wondering right now.  A lot of people don't realize that Federer has been nearly as dominant at Flushing Meadows as he was at the All-England Club.  He'll be going for his 5th straight, an incredible achievement.

Now the question isn't "can" he.  Because he still has the talent and game to beat anyone, even Nadal.  People are raving about his forehand errors lately but they aren't as bad as people seem to be saying.  His game was awful against Giles Simon but in the middle of the second set against Ginepri you could really see something in him click.  If you didn't watch the Ivo Karlovic match you don't realize how ridiculous it was that Ivo won that match.  Federer made two unforced errors in the match (he made more but these two were the ones that mattered) one in each tiebreak that cost him the match.  Even Nadal said something along the lines of "Roger was very unlucky today."  My point?  Federer is already looking far better than he did against Simon two weeks ago, people just don't realize it because they see the loss to Karlovic, hear the talk about forehand errors and just assume the worst.  But he was playing well enough that day to beat anyone who wasn't 6'10" and hitting their first serve at 140 mph and having it kick up about 12 feet in the air. :-P

But I digress, as I said, the question isn't can he.  The question is... will he?  And the answer to that question is extremely debatable.  As the four time defending champion he will likely go in as the favorite although not the #1 seed.  While Nadal will be the #1 I just don't see him as being the favorite to win a hard court slam.  Djokovic could be considered the favorite as well after his impressive performance in Cincy this weekend but he isn't really coming into the tournament that strong either.

I think the Olympics will go a long way to show people what to expect.  A lot of people predicted Federer to win the gold medal on the hard courts of Beijing but those predictions were made prior to his early round exits in the Masters Series' Events, they were based on the memory of his brilliant but not good enough play in London.  Whoever wins the Olympics (If it is one of the top 3 players) will probably go in as the favorite to win the U.S. Open but if Federer can at least make it to the medal round (semi-finals) then he could very well be considered the favorite even if one of the other two wins gold.  Federer has owned the U.S. Open almost as well as he had Wimbledon, he lost one of his kingdoms this year, I don't think he wants to lose two.  Then again, as The Rolling Stones might say, you can't always get what you want.

Will Roger Federer win the U.S. Open?  I'm going to go out on a limb and say yes.  I'm admittedly bias because I'm a huge Fed fan but I really could see him doing it.  Your "additional details" says that his last two tournaments have been awful and I really disagree.  The one in Cincy he was "very unlucky" according to Mr. Nadal who would probably know what he was talking about lol.  The deciding factor will be his psychological state going in.  He was having an awful time with his game going into Roland Garros but actually seemed to use the French as a tune-up for Wimbledon.  He re-discovered his game in those two months and seems to have hit another lull.  If he manages to pull the U.S Open out of his hat it will probably be the most emotional win of his career.  He has gone through so much this year from mono to looking like barely a top 100 player and then from being routed at Roland Garros to the heartbreak on the lawns of the All-England Club, and now this.  If he can breakthrough and win this one to end the season he'll bawl like a baby.  I'd love to see that lol

But like I said, the tournament in Cincy really wasn't that bad and if he can have a good showing in the Olympics then he'll go into New York feeling like he's back, feeling confident.

And in the Tennis Kingdom the only thing more dangerous than a cornered Roger Federer is a cornered and confident Roger Federer.  Don't count him out, not now and not for awhile yet.

  6. mmmm, i don't think he will.-

unfortunatelly i don't think rafa will win it either, and probably novak will (ewwww).-

but i still have hopes andy roddick will win it (maybe the rest will be tired from the trip from beijing, haha)

  7. yeah, but nadal might win

  8. Of course he CAN. But the US Open this year is wide open.

In recent times, we have seen the best and worst of Roger. At Wimbledon, the guy fought with everything he had to hold on to his title. His grandslam titles mean a lot to him, and I bet he will do everything to hold on to his US crown. But we've also seen  him lose to very ordinary players. Apparantly everyone now thinks they have a shot against  him.

Nadal was looking invincible until he lost (rather easily) to Djokovic. Then Djokovic lost in the Cincy finals. Any of these three guys could win the US Open. But they could just as easily lose it.

  9. well obvioulsy federer has the talent and shot making to win the US OPEN let alone any slam..

but do i think its going to happen.. more then likely not.... his performance on hardcourt season has brought out the worst in his game.. losing to relaitvely ordinary players....

his confidence and consistency has really  gone down the tubes..

and everyone is playing there cards right to seize there window of opurtunity to upset federer

there are other players who are looking much better then him, in particular, Nadal, djovick, and even a top notch Andy murray or Gasquet can cause problemsf or him..

I say he will lose at the US OPEN to  wrap up all the disapointments he had at the slams this year...i just do not think he will have the confidence or sublime play we are use to.

  10. can he? yes

will he? no, djokovic or nadal will

  11. As much as I wish he would, I don't think he will, not this year, he might do it next year. Being realistic, look at the schedule of this year, and his defeat in Wimbledon, he's hit a low patch this year, no matter what it is, there's something bugging him in his mind, he needs to clear his mind up, forget about the ranking, the titles, the history record... rebuild his confidence, his self-belief that takes time. I believe that he will fight back, we just need to be patient.

Hopefully, Roger will prove me wrong in US open 2008!

  12. yes, he needs to!  he's now ranked #2 and nadal is #1.  federer, i believe, is better

  13. I hope he can but I don't think so. Fed lost his motivation after losing the wimbledon final and his game right now is not what his normal game is. His movement is gotten slower a bit, and his forehand is not zipping through the court. He is making way too much UE on the forehand side, also just rest of the game is not there. His approach shots are just hanging in middle of the court, so his transition to the net isn't so smooth. If Fed can play like he did at Wimbledon and clay court season I would be more than surprised. I'm a strong Nadal fan but I know he can't win USO anytime soon so I want Fed to win it, Also he needs to break the Sampras record. If he can step up and play well enough to beat Djokovic, he can win the title.

  14. Yes, he can. I hope these past 2 small tourneys have given him a wake up call and finally the motivation he needs to play better. I believe he will try to fix the holes that were in his game and I'm sure we will see much better play from him as well.
