Can female broadway actresses play male roles on broadway?

I am actually preparing to audition for the role of Boq in ''Wicked'' or Tobias Ragg in ''Sweeney Todd''. However, I am also looking forward to auditon for any male role in ''Les Miserables'' including Marius or Enjolras.

why don't you just audition for a female part?

Its not unheard of like Peter Pan.But with so many actors and actresses auditioning to day the odds of you actually getting one of those roles is miniscule.Casting directors like to cast based on talent and the specific type for the role.Break a leg.
