I have been told it is ok to through them out but do not think they knew any more about this than myself. Also was told it is ok to through out non alkline batterys, alklines would contaminate ground water. Best advise ask the experts! Any answers will be much appreciated. Thanks for your time.

  1. i allways put them in the recycle box, and they took them allways. i have no idea what they do with them, maybe they just trow them out:D....no just kidding. anyway, i changed my batteries into chargable.ones....less toxic things...

  2. Yes...they can and should be...you may have to call around to see where to take them...for example your reclying center...do not put in the trash....take care

  3. We really should never throw any toxic waste into the trash, even though it happens every day.

  4. Generally Walgreens and stores of the like have recycling containers for your used batteries. Do not throw them out because batteries contain heavy elements that are harmful to the environment and humans

  5. should  be  recyled.

  6. IKEA offers recycling of batteries.  If recycling is available why not?

  7. I've helped design landfills and generally, they are designed to keep water out so contamination to groundwater from a modern landfill is not usually an issue.  That is not the case with many older landfills, however.

It is safe to throw out most non-rechargable batteries in the trash.  Newer batteries have a very low mercury content. That was the major issue with disposal of non-rechargable batteries in the past (and currently an issue with energy saving light bulbs).  Don't throw out large quantities of batteries as a group since they still have some electrical potential and might short.

Rechargable batteries contain heavy metals such as cadmium and lithium and should be recycled since even the best built landfill may eventually fail to keep water out.

  8. I asked a city recycling center worker once this same question.  I was told that it was okay to dispose of newer made disposable batteries into the trash, and that they did not need to be disposed of in household hazardous waste anymore.

  9. yes flash light batteries can be recycled, and should not be thrown out in the garbage or trash as you say it.  Best thing to do is call up your mayor or community councilor and ask them if they've got a recycling plan for used batteries and if not if they would start one or direct you to someone who would be able to help you.  I'm lucky cuz my college used batteries and then have the right people despose of them for us recycleably.  I just put all my used batteries in a plastic bad and when I have a large amount I take it in to my school and they take care of it.
