  1. Though a pain in the but, florescent lights remain the choice of most when building and lighting a barn as they are long lasting and thus cost effective, they also create more light than the standard light bulb....but they do suffer from extremes in temperature and when the starters go bad they have a tendency to flicker off and on maddeningly.  In the end it comes down to personal preference, you either like them or you don't.

  2. Fluorescent lights really only work well when temperatures are above 40 degrees. The ballast is slow to start when temperatures are cold and may not start at all if temperatures are very cold, and even when the ballast does start the fluorescent light bulbs are very slow to brighten when it is cold. I have been there and done that in my garage, and although my barn is heated to a comfy 45 degrees during the winter, I won't ever make the same mistake in the barn as I did with fluorescent lights in the garage.

  3. Most large indoor arenas use the large Halogen lights.  They take some time to warm up when first turned on, but are the most cost effective for the amount of light that you need!  Good Luck!
