Question:

Can frozen artichokes be substituted with fresh artichokes steamed or boiled?

i have a recipe that calls for frozen artichokes. I have fresh artichokes. Can they be substituted with a little adjustment? are frozen artichokes basically steamed artichokes? or more like the marinated artichoke hearts?

  1. You can substitute fresh artichokes, but you will have to cook them first, then strip the leaves so that you have the actual heart. There are quite a few artichokes in a frozen package or a can so you will need at least 6 to 8 fresh artichokes to do this. Frozen artichokes are basically steamed artichokes.....just all of the work has already been done for you. Canned marinated artichokes have been cooked already also, but come marinated in either water or oil. I do not recommend using the oil marinated type in a recipe calling for frozen artichokes.
