Question:

Can gestational diabetes be avoided in future pregnancies?

My endocrinologist told me that I would most likely have gestational diabetes in future pregnancies unless I "lost a whole bunch of weight" between pregnancies. I'm not a fat person, but I was wondering, how much weight would I have to lose to avoid getting diabetes again? GDM has prevented me from wanting any more kids!!

  1. Well weight Loss wont prevent it.Though it can lesson the chances. But I know Plenty of younger women I have came across that are normal weight to even some under weight and still have and still Got gestational diabetes and they we're not older women. There is more factors that cause it other then being over weight or bigger then some women.I can say though from experience I had GD with my first child and then my second One and With My Second one it was by far A lot Better Sugar levels and everything And with my second child when i  got pregnant i was even 20 pounds more then i was with my first.Everything was a breeze with my second even with GD labor delivery Everything and My baby was also perfectly fine.I Do not think the Fear of GD should hold you back if you do want another child.

  2. I had GD with my first pregnancy (insulin dependant by about 8.5 mths) and my sugar levels have been rising again with this pregnancy (currently 6 months). In between the 2 I ended up losing about 20 lbs. I started my first pregnancy at 205, had her at 208 (ya, once nice thing about the diet change...litereally ALL baby weight and then some) and within 2 weeks of the birth I was down to 186 (so lost 19 lbs total). Doc said this was fabulas unfortunatly all that 'strict diet' stuff caught back up with me and after about 6-7 months I was back at the 200lbs mark. Then I had GaulStones (be carefull trying to lose the weight too quickly because thats what gave me Gaul stones) and had to be on a zero fat diet until it was removed. That diet caused me to go back down to about 190 which is where I stayed. Like I said, I'm curently pregnant (6 mths) with #2 and the weight loss (although..its not a huge weight loss) didn't seem to affect it at all because I'm positive I've got GD agian : ( anyways, sorry for writing a novel, but thats my story with weight and GD...oh and like I said...a big caution about trying to lose the weight quickly between pregnanies...Gaul Bladder attacks are just as bad as labour only they happen 2-3 times per week for months.
