Do the peas have to be fresh? How big should the goldfish be before I feed them peas?

  1. Yes, defreeze it and cut it up. Make sure it is not salted and make sure it is organic. They will like it. Feed your goldfish bloodrooms. Great treat for them. Goldfish can be about 5cm. Fresh is better. Good luck. It will enhance their color.

  2. Yes, fish can eat canned peas.  In fact, that's what I got to feed my fish.  I was cheap and picked up a can of peas from the dollar store.  They were 2/$1.00 so I paid all of 50 cents for a whole can.  My husband and I both hate peas, so I didn't have any at home and didn't want to get anything expensive just for fish.  I just opened the can and squished the peas so that the insides squirted out into a little Ziplock freezer bag and threw the shells away.  I squished peas until I was thoroughly sick of it and then I quit and fed some to all my fish and threw the bag of pea innards into the freezer.  I didn't even do half of the can and I still have peas in the freezer!  Now anytime I want to feed my fish peas I just go and scrape a little off the chunk in the bag.  You can feed pea innards to tiny babies.  I feed them to guppy fry which are smaller than any goldfish fry.  Oh, and sometimes I feed my fish the innards of peas I get in my fried rice when I get Chinese food.  Did I mention I hate peas?  ;p

  3. Yes. Cooked peeled mashed. Make them tiny pieces when feeding it to them. This is also known as a laxative for a fish and to cure swim bladder disease.

  4. Yes they're fine to use.  I try to find the salt free kind, otherwise just give them a good rinse.  You could also use frozen peas-just thaw them first.  Usually split the pea open with my fingernail.  For the smaller fish, I just give them a half a pea, the bigger ones get a full pea.  Start feeding them a pea once or twice a week now.  It's won't hurt them if they're still young.

  5. The peas don't need to be fresh. They can be the frozen or canned variety. For canned peas make sure you rinse them very well: salt or other additives can mess with the fish. Pinch off the 'skin' around each pea and cut it or mash it for your goldie. Any size goldie (assuming yours isn't a fry!) can eat a pea so long as you cut it up into bite-size chunks.

I would NOT feed a pea more than once a week, despite other advice here: peas are high in simple sugars which are not healthy for your fish. Other greens do not contain such sugars: romaine lettuce, kale, green beans, colliard, mustard greens, turnip greens, the list goes on. Peas are great in moderation, just like everything in a goldie diet.

  6. As long as they're cooked, they should be fine.

Fresh foods: Romaine lettuce, Peas cooked, earthworms, eggs, cucumber, insect larvae, grapes, oranges, and spinach.
