Compared to the archaic, same good old compass.....a fully functional gps will, of course, render better servitude !!!!  Some people are simply too ill tempered during the worst situations...remember to keep your cool......have the presence of mind when emergencies arise....  No expensive machine will function properly without the HUMAN FACTOR.........

  3. Only if you can find a clearing where you can get an unobstructed view of the sky.        MOST gps units will not work in a dense forest.

  4. I dont see why not. As long as the area is recognised by the gps system then i guess so. only difficulty will be if trees have been cut down just recently and not updated on the map!

  5. If you can get an unobstructed view of the sky, yes. the gps will not have names for the areas necessarily, but it will have pretty precise coordinates. It will also have a compass reading. If it does not work, try to find a river or stream. Follow the water flow downstream/downriver. This will give you your best chance of finding safety.
