Can greyhounds become good pets?
Since the very outset of the sport, the post-retirement lives of greyhounds have always been a matter of controversy among animal rights groups, NGOs, governing boards and owners. Despite many deliberations, mind-storming meetings and protest demonstrations,
there seems to be no proper protocol in force to regulate the way that can help runners to live with comfort and respect after hanging their boots.
In the major greyhound racing nations like Great Britain and USA, some animal rights activists have managed to set up a system that converts the retired dogs into pets, but this is also not fully effective. Still, there are many hounds who find no better
homes when they pull out of playfield. Thus, either they suffer some sort of diseases or get the axe from their owners who no more consider them to be commercial icons.
According to experts, there can be two decent ways to dispose of a retired greyhound; either he/she can be used for breeding purposes or adopted as a pet.
In the first case, all dogs and b*****s do not qualify to the standard of good breeding, as a breeder always wants a consistent winner, regular performer, healthy and high-quality animal, but all runners cannot be like this.
As far as adoption is concerned, it also involves many complications. At the first stage, most people are not ready to accept a racing dog or b***h as a pet, claiming that such animals cannot prove to be safe and reliable.
A family always want such pet as can be friendly and loyal to their people, goods and outsiders at the same time. One thing is clear that it is always hard to mould a runner in this way. But, it does not mean that this is totally impossible, as there can
be some techniques that help a runner live like a pet.
In both ways, all retired greyhounds cannot be accommodated. So, there must be a uniform and effective system to give the retired runners a happy and healthy life.
We must take some calculated and effectual steps to stop every sort of maltreatment met by retired runners. We should be attentive and conscious towards them in the same way we do during their careers.
