i was reading up on it and didn't find anything about transferring it to humans. i know that mange mite cant be transferred but can cause temporary irritation for people with sensitive skin. but what about the lice? if it helps it's the kind that's white. i found a bug on my guinea and brushed him and washed him and brushed him again and looked twice and didn't see anything else. not even 1 egg and i looked hard and for a while each time. we just got him and he's still in quarantine and i have 4 other guinea's. we're buying advantage just in case and we're going to treat them all. but what about us?

  1. It may go to your heads but it probally wont itch or anything since its not like human lice but just incase i would call a vet or a pet doctor or somehting to ask about that buit im pretty sure that if it did get on your head it wouldnt be a probleme (about the itchng) but it owuld probally lay eggs so be carefull

  2. Possibly in some areas such as the head. But theres a good chance that it will not. Rabies is the most diease that animals spread to humans.

  3. Probably not.

Just don't go rubbing your hair on him..

  4. Nope!  Aren't you glad??? :)

The lice on guinea pigs are species specific. They can, however, spread to your other piggies so I'm glad you had the forethought to quarantine.

The Advantage does a fabulous job of getting rid of those nasty lice. Its a bit expensive, but well worth it. You'll be able to treat all 5 piggies with one tube (one drop behind each ear is all it takes) and then save the rest for periodic preventive treatments.

    Good luck!

  5. Definitely not! In general, humans can pass diseases onto animals, but for most diseases, animals do not pass them back. For instance, the main disease that rodents can pass on to humans is rabies.

I've never heard of a rodent passing lice on to a human.

  6. No, you're safe from lice.  The lice you find on people's heads are only able to live on human heads.

"Can lice be transmitted from my dog or cat to my children?

No. Head lice are specific to humans. They can only survive on a human host. If a head louse is removed from its host, it will die within a day or two. " http://schoolipm.ifas.ufl.edu/tp2.htm

    Hope that helps!

  7. Nope.

  8. yes it can spread to humans. (i got them all over) My old guinea pig chubby had mites (the think they were called scarbies) and had to be put to sleep. You can NEVER be sure that all of them are off. I did the same thing than i found more and more and the time that i got to the vet he was covered.

Put the one with the mites in a different cage and call the vet.

  9. No they cant they are species specific.  Sounds like you are doing a grand job of getting rid of them and thank goodness you quarantined piggy as these can spread from piggy to piggy.  I would treat him again in 1 week to be sure as for you I wouldnt worry just make sure you wash your hands and dont wear the same clothes when petting all the piggys are they can be passed that way.  I would  also recomend getting in a new batch of hay just incase they are in that better to be safe.
