My sister keeps female hamsters and female mice together and she says they don't fight... does this actually work? If she had males of either species would they breed?

  1. theyr safe to keep together

  2. They probably won't breed but keeping them together is a bad idea. I've had a hamster and they are very rough and are nocturnal (sp?) and I don't think mice are. So neither would get sleep and it would cause fighting.

Also food might be an issue. Like, a certain veggie might be poisonus to hamsters but not mice. Do your research, get a mice and hamster book, but I'm not sure. They might be able to live together.

  3. if raised together, they can live together... not sure how long for.  Both species eat the same food (seeds and veggies)...

    but different species breeding... no

  4. Hamsters are animals that prefer to live alone.  You can keep them with other hamsters but it may not always end well.  Mice also don't always live together well.  I know someone who kept mice together and one killed the other and ate it's head... not pleasant.  It's really never a good idea to keep small animals of different species together.  The only ones that live together well are small rabbits and guinea pigs, but even then it only really works if they live together from a very young age.

  5. Shouldn't be kept together. They don't exist together naturally in the wild so it's not a good idea. Yes they might be OK at the moment but doesn't mean it can't end in bloodshed.

Apart from anything else, hamsters and mice have different nutritional requirements and so should not be kept together for the sake of proper husbandry.

Hamsters and mice cannot reproduce together, they are from different genera.

  6. If you put them together at the exact same time you buy them then they wont. But if a hamsters been living in the cage for a while you cant just throw a mouse in because the hamster or the rat will get very territorial and end up killing the other one. its not a good idea to mix a mouse with an animal thats usually not meant to be mixed with

  7. That absolutely does not work.  Hamsters are incredibly territorial animals, and shouldn't even live with other hamsters, much less other species!

Hamsters don't become aggressive until they're about 2 months old, which is why you don't see them fighting in pet stores.  Also, they are nocturnal so the fighting will typically be done at night; after hours.

  8. yes they live happily together!

  9. If you get males, yes they will. But I never knew mice and hamster could be kept together. That's kind of cool.

  10. thats pretty kool that they dont fight. and yes they will probally breed!

  11. No, typically they fight.  Both are territorial rodents, and hamsters typically like living solo.

Males and females would not be able to reproduce, no.
