Question:

Can hamsters be epileptic?

I ask because I know cats and dogs can be, but I wonder about hamsters.Recently, my hamster was diagnosed with a repiratory problem, which was noticable, and we've been giving her medicine. Well, shes been recovering for 3 days, but then after that, we find her shaking in the cage sometimes, with only one eye open, or she's squinting. She's well for 2-3 days, then after that, we sometimes find her in her cage looking like what I just described (shaky, one ye open). So, does this mean she's epileptic, or is it a reaction to the medication. this is the only medication she could take, or she would die, but like she just got over a respiratory illness, and after a couple of days, shes shaky and her eyes are weird again. I'm supposed to medicate her for 14 days, and its been a week already. Is my hamster epileptic, or is it something else???

  1. It's possible that your hamster has epilepsy.  My hamster had to have a cyst removed from his hip, and after that he started walking funny and fall over so we took him back to the vet, and they told us that  it's not unusual for hamsters to have brain issues such as tumors, epilepsy, etc. Ours ended up having a brain tumor.

Of course it could also be the medication. Maybe its allergic? You should take it back to the vet to get it checked out.

  2. She may be reacting to the medication you have been giving her.

Im sure epilepsy is apparent in animals too...get the vet to check her out again..poor thing :((
