Can harmful gases come from the showers when one showers?

If your shower doesn't have a drain trap yes sewer gasses can come up into the shower.

As strange as that sounds, I have seen some pretty bad plumbing.

In the Houston area, water from some wells contains dissolved methane.  This may not be harmful when showering but there was an incidence of a man sitting on the John having a smoke.  

When he dropped the still lit butt between his legs into the toilet bowl he ignited methane that had outgassed from the water.  This little flash fire really woke him up.
