Question:

Can having a small hole punctured into a wall cause the paint to emit more VOCs into the air?

My wall has a small gash on it that goes pretty deep, from where something fell and struck it. Because the paint was disturbed in this area of the wall, would it be releasing more VOCs and things than normal? And also, where the wall itself is torn, could there be any other chemicals or substances that might be gassing off into the air I'm breathing in? Lastly, if so, could I stop chemicals from coming out of it just by applying duck tape? I've heard that most chemicals can't get through duck tape.

  1. Duct tape was supposed to be for taping and sealing air ducts in office heating and air conditioning systems.

Oddly enough that is the only thing it does not work for.

It works better for taping ducks together, (quack, quack, quack)

As R.C. said above. Nope, the wall will not gas off more.

  2. You get more harmful VOC's in your lungs walking down a city street than you get from old paint and wall board, so no worries.  But if you are concerned, why not duck(sic) tape the whole wall?  And doesn't the tape give off VOC's?
