  1. nost people reaction to a given medicine can not be told in advance. thus the follow up by a doctor. plus the fact that diabetes has many "different" makes of medicine...so does the mental disorders...

conclusion --unless we know the exact nature of the medicines and the individual illness it is impossible to pass a judgment.

  2. There may be some medications for mental illness that a doctor would not prescribe due to a patient being at risk for or already having diabetes.  Some cause weight gain, others have a significant effect on the pancreas, liver, and/or kidneys.  Sometimes, though, there may not be a chioce in medication and the patient will therefor be monitored for the development of diabetes.

Some psychiatric medications increase the risk of developing diabetes, as well.  For some patients, getting off those meds will be enough to reverse the condition, but for many others medication induced diabetes can become permantent.  (there are several lawsuits happening because of this)

Poor diabetic control can potentially interfere with some medications, either directly (blood sugar level) or indirectly (damage to organs such as the liver or kidneys in which the psychiatric medication is metabolized through or may contribute further damage to).

There is also the possibility that diabetic and psychiatric medications can interfere or interct with one another - something your doctor is already aware of and would try to avoid.
