Can having no memory card drain a camera's batteries?

At work we have Sony powershots SC700. They are going through batteries fast. I don't know if it is a camera issue or battery issue. The cameras are only a few months old, the batteries are rechargeables.

It's not the card it's the batteries and it's common. I would look into Lithium Batteries for the camera.
