  1. I don't know about 2008, but when my brother was younger, waaaaaaay younger, cuz he's 17 now...he used to travel on his dad passport, and my friend has a 2 yr old daughter, and right before the baby's 2nd birthday, the baby was traveling on her mother's passport, so i think the child can travel on their parent's passport until they are two, but it would be best to ask a travel agent of some one of the sort that question though.

  2. Living in Jamaica and applying there through the US Consulate for an American passport or through the Jamaican government for a Jamaican passport?

Silly or not, Americans of all ages need individual passports to travel. We got one for our little guy when he was 4-months old. Just taking the photo was quite a process as he couldn't yet hold up his head but he must be photographed in front of the same screen as the adults (No getting propped up on Mom's lap).  I have heard that some shops will place the background screen on the floor, you lie the baby on it, then they snap the picture from above. Ours managed to crop me out from most of the shot (though my fingers still show under the baby's arms). Other rules that apply to kids and adults:

Eyes must be open. No crying. No headbands or hats.

In the US, once you have the photo BOTH parents must appear with abirth certificate to sign the application (if only one can go, the other must send an affidavit giving permission). And the wait is from 2-3 weeks (with special expedition fee) to 8-12 weeks for processing.

The funny part is that our now 2 and a half year old looks nothing like the bald squirmy baby on his passport and he will keep it at least until his fifth birthday!

Hope that Jamaica has an easier policy!

  3. Chances are he is going to need his own passport.

9/11 really screwed up the world....

I suppose he could travel on your passport, but for how long will he be allowed to do so? To me it would make sense to get him his own passport now, especially if you are going to be traveling to Cayman on a regular basis (by that I mean at least once every year) Your best bet is to speak to the consulate and ask them their advice on all of this. If it really is until the age of two before he needs his own passport....trust me two years will fly by before you know it, and then you will have to be looking about his passport and visa....again.

Concerning facial and 'fingerprint' changes (not that fingerprints change, but anyway)  - That is the reason a child's passport/visa is required to be renewed every 5 years, until adulthood where you only need to renew it every decade.

P.S.: It wont hurt to get the baby his own passport....it might save you a lot of trouble in the future, especially if you decide to let him travel with his father alone or a relative.

  4. I don't know what the laws are in Jamaica, but at least in the US, each person needs a passport.

  5. Jamaica allows children under 2 to travel on their parent's passport. You need to contact the passport office to have him added. Consider the cost, it may cost less or not much more to just have his passport done. Also what is Cayman's policy on visas? Will they allow your son on yours or do they require each person to have his own? Cantact the Cayman Embassy.

  6. Honestly, i think this is one question you DEFINATELY need to check with the consulate about. It really doesnt make sense for a 7 month old child to have a passport for him/herself. The picture would be useless. A fingerprint is useless. An eye scan is useless...all because all of these features would change dramatically over any given 2-month period.

I know the law USED TO say that you dont need a passport below a certain age if travelling with the parent, but only the consulate can confirm for sure. Also remember that the visa requirement for Jamaica>Cayman travel is fairly new and the rules might still be evolving.
