  1. Yes, it can explode. I feel that every body in here already mention all the points.

  2. YES! IF THEY OVER HEAT OR RUN LOW ON WATER THEY ARE EXCEPTIONALLY DANGEROUS! They are required to have a relief means and a fuel cutoff. As well as other controls that are safety devises likie a low water cutoff. The other devices are usually incorporated into larger boilers.

  3. there is alot of difference between a hot water heater and a hot water boiler. a hot water boiler has pop off valves and hi pressure sensors,hi temp.i have never heard of one blowing up,i've had one for 40 years.

  4. There are several safty devices on all CSA approved heating and cooling pieces of equipment DO NOT tamper with them.call a pro.

  5. Hot water heaters can explode! They are equipped with what is called a pop off valve. The only other cut off is the usual household breaker that is designed to cut power from excessive amperage, not over heating water heater element unless shorted internally from inside the water heater.

In 1976 My dad lived in a apartment and the hot water heater exploded. Throwed 12 inch concrete blocks over 200 feet away. I seen the entire walls shoved to the next wall in that room. How extensive was the explosion? A train track located 100 yards away with a train that was passing by at the time of the explosion was stooped by the train engineer hearing it and reported that it sounded like his train was hit by dynamite. This occurrence happened in Dalton,Georgia ,app. month was either June or July if you would like to investigate it. It was in the Daily Citizen Newspaper.

A hot water heater has a temperature setting installed on each element. If not aware of this it is advisable to get someone with the experience to check it for you.

If any more I can help you with then please feel free to ask.
