Question:

Can high school students make a petition against something in their high school?

My Private High School recently fired our head football coach of 40 years. He is the most influentual man in our school's history according to the students and players who have known him. The headmaster fired him and refuses to give a reason to him or anyone else on why she fired him. Then she went ahead and fired his wife who is a middle school bible teacher and won't give any reasons for why she was fired either. The students are outraged and we all want to do something about it. In a meeting with some students she said that she would resign if a petition was made against her decision to fire him. If we were to make this petition, is there any way that she would have to resign like she stated? And by what guidelines would we have to follow in order to have this done. We also want to demand that he and his wife are reinstated at their former positions. Note, that this is a private christian high school and middle school consisting of about 350 students. Please help. thanks.

  1. Petitions never do anything.

Let me tell you what gets things done 100% of the time.

Write letters, and lots of them.

Hand out addressed, stamped, envelops to parents and students, and have them fill them out and send them. Letter writing, especially from parents, will always get things done. Petitions are as effective as farting in the shower

  2. Sure the student can make the petition, but your headmistress is under no legal obligation to keep her word.

What will make a difference is students having their parents write letters to her boss (yes, she has one) threatening to withdraw their children from the school until or unless the headmistress makes public the reasons for her decision & that those reasons were justifiable.

Trust me, private schools which are suddenely faced with loss of revenue due to the actions/decisions of one of the faculty become very responsive.

  3. You have every right to start a petition.  Now it doesn't mean that it will make things change nor is there anyway to bind your principal into accepting it.  Your school probably has a governing council, for example school board or archdioses or someone that your principal has to report to.  Get parents involved.

  4. You should get your parents to call up and compain to the principal and start a petition. Ask every student in the high school and middle school to sign it. Ask teachers and staff workers. (they might not sign because their position could be at risk but its worth a shot.) And hold you principal to her statement. Since it is a christian high school bring the bible into your arguement. and more importantly pray that God will have his will in this situtation. Good luck!
