Question:

Can home routers use routing algorithms to work side-by-side?

I know that normal routers use routing algorithms to talk to each other and link different subnets together. Can home routers do the same and if so, what algorithms do they use? Are there any resources that would help me in setting this up? (I am using a Bt Home Hub).

  1. Setting up additional routers on a home dsl connection is not a good idea. The only way to do this is to use a port on the home hub to give a subnet inside your own network. This will be able to see the machines on that network, but must have a totally independent network of its' own. The original network will NOT be able to see the new one. Routers block this as part of their function as a router. To add other machines you are either better off getting a network switch and connecting it to the hub for wired machines, or a wireless range extender or access point for additional wireless.
