Can horses eat just plain old wheat?

  1. Yes horses CAN eat wheat.  It is actually common in some areas that are popular for wheat growing.  It can also be fed to horses as hay or used in feeds.  But I would not suggest using it because in some cases, if a horse eats too much wheat at one time and doesn't digest it properly, it can form a dough ball in the intestines.


  2. I've heard you can feed bearded barley hay, but you stand the chance of a piece of grain lodging in the horse's mouth and abcess.  Then you have a vet bill to pay off.  Not sure about anything other than wheat germ which I have fed to my horses on occassion.
