Can hostas grow in moss soil, or should I dig up the moss, and then plant them?

I am wanting to plant hostas, but I am in a bad area with moss, will they grow?

  1. Yes, they will grow in the moss. Just dig up a few inches around the moss when you plant them, to give them a little room to spread the first year. The next year, they will have no trouble resurfacing. You might stay away from the smaller ones, such as "mouse ears."

    You might also want to plant some Solomon's Seal, epimedium and helleborus in your shade garden. All love shady areas and all will do well with moss.
