Question:

Can house cats still get fleas?

I have a house cat. I have had her since she was a kitten and even though we had her vaccinated, spayed and chipped she is too scared to go outside. She has been scratching a lot recently and my daughter has been waking up with bites on her legs - the cat regularly sleeps at the foot of her bed. Could she have fleas even though she doesn't interact with any other animals? Could someone else have brought them into the house and introduced them?

  1. Definitely!  Or, as sad as it sounds, she could have picked them up at the vet's.  Think about it, it's no different than when we go to the doctor for a wellness checkup and end up catching a cold from Joe Blow hacking away next to us in the waiting room, right??

You'll want to de-flea the cat, and all bedding and ESPECIALLY the carpet in your home to get rid of them.  Once you get a few fleas, it quickly turns into a million.  So the quicker you react the better.  I recommend washing all fabrics you can, and if you sprinkly powdered Tide laundry detergent over the carpets (let it sit for 1 hour or so) and vacuum it up, it kills the fleas.  Smells nice too.

  2. Yes, it's very possible. It only needs you (or anyone else) to have walked, for instance, through some grass where another cat has passed by and you can pick them up on your legs or clothing and bring 'em into your house.  Then they happily hop onto the cat.

  3. Yes, they can get in the house and in the carpet, couch, clothes, and breed.

  4. Yes of course, fleas are not scared of entering a house

  5. No she can't get them unless another cat/dog comes into the house

  6. Yes, they can, but very rarely. If you or someone else have been in contact with another pet outside the house , especially in summer they can carry fleas into the house on their legs,

  7. Yes fleas are really sneaky buggers. Get the cat some Capstar tablets (will kill the fleas instantly) and if you can, put the cat in a bathroom and put a towel at the base of the door and then flea bomb the house. Just make sure none of the chemicals go near the cat.

  8. yes. so can you

  9. Yes it happened to me once. My cats always stay inside but still got fleas one summer. A flea can crawl in from outside, under your door, through your window, stick to someone's clothing or shoe, or some flea eggs could stick on someone. It only takes one or two fleas or possibly some eggs coming into your home and then it's on. Look closely under your cat's fur for movement or for reddish black fleas. Also you can ruffle her fur over a white surface and then check on it for flea dirt (looks like salt and pepper). Also watch for fleas on floors etc. It's safe to treat a cat with a GOOD flea treatment just to be sure she doesn't have them or as a precaution, but it's possible your cat doesn't even have them unless you actually see one.

  14. Dear sarah***

All of my five cats live in my duplex.  I never had a problem with fleas until it is vaccination time and every time one of them will "catch" a flea.  not "a cold", but a "flea".  Within a day they are all scratching, flyin up and down the stairs.  sleeping one minute flying in the air the next.  Then i start all over again.  I give them advantage, much to their disgust, they start blinking their eyes even before i get to them!!  The one maine-coon peeps through his eyes at me, and won't open them until the smell has gone.  (it's histerical) to look at and i don't blame him for closing his eyes.  It's like having highlights in your hair.

Regular (daily) vaccuuming, grooming, monthly treatments helps in getting rid of them.  Don't laugh, but if i see a flea out comes my hairspray and it freezes or sets them.   mine are "mummy" fleas.

Please don't spray on your pet, only if u see them on furniture etc.

    luv

  15. This time of year, fleas can come in through screens, and we can also bring them in from outdoors on our shoes and clothing.  Get her a safe flea treatment from the vet like Advantage, and wash your daughter's bedding in the hottest water you can to kill the flea eggs.  Vacuum thoroughly, and put a flea collar in the vacuum bag to kill the fleas/eggs that it sucks up.  This is actually the only good use of a flea collar, LOL!   Repeat the vacuuming a couple of times, and the laundering of the bedding, and unless you've got a real infestation, that should take care of them.

All of my cats are indoors only, but I still flea treat them from spring until the ground freezes outside.  It's easier to prevent fleas than to get rid of them.

  16. yes - get flea powder/collar soonest.

    gd luck

  17. Yes, she most certainly can.

And yes someone could have brought them into the house.

The best thing is to gets some Advantax, or Frontline for cats.  Do this as soon as possible.  Both brands are expensive but last forever and well worth the expense.  Follow the directions.

An inside cat with fleas is a most miserable animal and so is a daughter.  (by the way flees do not bite everyone i think it is the chemistry in certain peoples bodies)   Others the flees give thim a fit!

To get rid of the flees in your house, get some powdered S---and Span.  (Yahoo wont allow me to type the beginning of that product, i assume it against guidelines. I know because i have I have told others about my flee remedy)

Anyway, lightly sprinkle the product through out your home on the carpets and leave it there for a day or two.  Vacuum and repeat the process. your fleas will die....  your home will have a fresh smell.

You, your daughter and your precious kitty  will be one happy buncha cat lovers.

No matter what, get the advantax as soon as possible for your cats relief, flees cause many, many health problems for cats.
