Can household mold produce a burnning cigarette smell?

I am living in an apartment building and every so often a burning cigarette-like smell fills the bathroom and kitchen. If I smell closely to the oven, underneath the kitchen sink, or underneath the bathroom sink (where the pipes join the wall), I can smell the odor more strongly. Does mold smell like that or is it an electrical issue etc???

  1. Yes.  Mold and mildew can smell like cigarette smoke.  Since the smell is strongest in the kitchen and bathroom - rooms in which there is plumbing - it's safe to say you probably have a mold problem.

Be careful when investigating.  If it's black mold it can be actually be deadly.  There are lots of tips on removing mold online.  Good luck!
