Question:

Can human lung tissue regenerate?

As a former smoker for 10 years, I've been told that lung tissue can regenerate to a point, depending on the fitness of the person and how long they've smoked. I've also been told that lung tissue cannot regenerate for someone who has been a smoker for more than 10 years, can anyone clarify?

  1. It also depends on the amount of smoking done per day. Even a pack a day smoker of ten years has very, very little chance of any improvement in lung quality.

There is too much permanent damage already acquired.

See your doctor if you need further clarification.

    All the best.

  2. Yes. However it is rather minimal. To increase it you of course, such as with the regeneration of muscle. Need to stimulate it. Regular exercise until breathlessness will generally lead to the growth of new lung cells. You'd however be naive to think that you could fix it all, a lot of the scarring will stay and be permanent.
