Hello guys, please dont answer this question unless A. you surf or B. You want to make fun of me for being fat. Anywho i have a question, i am a fat dood. i am like 5'10 and weight 185 lbs, so i am not the most agile guy in the world. however i would consider myself athletic. But ya, i have tried to surf a few times, however it wasnt happening. The waves were not picking up up and taking me anywhere. Is it because i am too fat for the waves to move me? perhaps i need to paddle faster so the wave can take me? i cant even use a body board because waves just go right under me rather than taking me with them. what am i doing wrong? should i try using realwiings?

  1. I am a very fat guy at 620.  When I was lighter - up to about 500, I used to surf.  I made sure the board was wide enough and made of good flotation material.  Keep trying - take a lesson or two - it will come.

  2. Duuuuude, totally!

  3. i rather be 185 pounds instead of 232 pounds i really dont consider you too be fat cuz i would wanna have muscles instead of fat  soo dont let people put you down because you are overwieght  atleast you are  better bein that much then sumone who is 6'3 108 pounds

  4. u need to get bigish waves to shift u 4 body bording, just to say i'm "cuddley" and i do windsurfing every saturday (in the summer as i live in scotland( to cold in the winter)), and i have been surfing and all i can say is use a longer, wide board as it give umore satabliity.

  5. yes you can.

    185 is like nothing

  6. A. I have a fat friend who surfs. I don't though and know nothing about it.

    B. Maybe you should take up a different sport... like competitive eating, f****s.

Joking! You said I could make fun of you. I had to!!!

  7. If you can swim, you can surf.  It takes a little while to learn, and sometimes the waves aren't there, but much bigger guys than you have learned.  Go for it.

  8. WELL DUH!

  9. You run the risk of being harpooned by whalers. That should make you paddle faster.

  10. To be honest with you, from a different perspective, i'm athletic in-shape etc. and still failed to catch a wave on my several trips to Hawaii. I think it has to be the right combination of things, and I alos feel it has a lot to do with coordination/stability. I would assert however that the difficulty of surfing mean that one would need to really train at it before they could master the trade. It's sort of like golf I think. But the weight issue is hard to say, but i would assume that to balance yourself out with the board in time for catching the wave, being overweight would prove it to be a heavy task.

  11. Rent or buy a cheap longboard.  A 9' standard sized board will float anyone up to 230lbs no problem.

If you are just learning just remember - foam is your friend.  You were probably riding a board that is just too small for  you.

  12. if you think u can then practice

  13. you can do it just as long as you can swim ha

  14. lol, u arent fat. u can definitely do it

  15. any thing takes practice.

  16. you're probably doing something wrong. you should get a teacher.

  17. sounds to me like your too hard hard on yourself.  try checking a height and weight schedule and i believe no i know you will find you are not fat fat!!  just keep practicing, and you'll get it.

  18. 5'10 and 185 lbs doesnt seem thaaat fat for a guy at all. so id say you could definitely surf.

  19. Sharks love fat; that's why they eat seals.  Notice they bite surfers, but just once usually.

Are you sure you want to take up a risky sport, where you are the main course ?

  20. ya

  21. Keep trying dude. Dont give up. Ask surfers for advice. Im not being mean to you but you could be abit heavy. Swimming can help. Good luck and have fun. Thats what I do. The bigger the wave the better it is for surfing.
