  1. Yes this is perhaps the most important question that needs to be publicly advertised as people consider adopting Blu-Ray.  People are reluctant to buy into the next step because they're afraid or unaware that their DVDs won't work anymore and fear rebuilding their library.

THIS IS NOT TRUE.  Keep your old DVDs and play them on a Blu-Ray player because it IS compatible.  Not only that it does act to upconvert DVDs (improve picture and sound) just like an upconvert dvd player.  Buy all your new movies on Blu.  Or rebuy them on Blu only if you want to.  Blu-Rays are basically an uncompressed form and display exact pictures and sounds as the movie studios intend.  There's nothing clearer picture or sound beyond this that will ever be detected by your human senses on current HDTVs.

  2. Yes.  Most BludRay/HD DVD players are backwards compatiable.  They wouldn't sell well if they only played one type of disc.

  3. yes, all blu ray and hd dvd player can play regular dvd and also play burn cd and dvd as well.

  4. Yes.  This is called "backwards compatible" when new technology is compatible with older technology.  In this case, newer DVD players (blu-ray) will play conventional DVDs.

  5. YES! DVD's can be played in a Blu-Ray player, they play:

    BD (regular Blu-Ray disc)

    BD-R (recordable)

    BD-RE (rewriteable)

    DVD

    DVD-R

    DVD+R

    DVD-RW

    CD-R

    CD-RW

the Blu-Ray player will also upconvert the picture quality of your DVD to near HD quality, still not as good as you Blu-Ray dsic (BD) but better than when you play them on a DVD player
