  1. A DSL router is generally a DSL router. There are 2 types of DSL - ADSL and SDSL. Most household users have ADSL so your router should work. If you are entitled to a free router have them send it as it might be a better router than what you currently have (you did not mention the make and model).

  2. ADSL is a modem with a built-in wireless router that connects to a phone-line...NTL is a cable modem only, you will have to attach a router to the NTL modem yourself.

  3. Whether you have a cable or ADSL service from Virgin they supply their own modems. You cannot use any other because they will not work properly especially the cable service. It's to do with the address in the modem.

They also lose their sense of humour very quickly if you use other equipment to connect their system without their express permission and it causes problems to it, which has happened in the past.

What your talking about is a wireless router that plugs into that modem so you can have a connection all over the house.

  4. Youve got your concepts a little fuddled. If you get your broadband through cable like with virgin, you don't need any kind of DSL as the cable goes into either a) a set-top box for your TV or b) a cable modem.

If you get your broadband down a telephone line (like with BT or Tiscali) you need an ADSL (Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line) modem.  SDSL (Synchronous Digital Subscriber Line) is normally used by businesses, and simply means that signals are sent from your network at the same speed as they get received.

ADSL usually gives you say, 8Mb downstream and 640K upstream. SDSL gives you perhaps 2Mb upstream and 2Mb downstream.

Cable is NOT any kind of Digital Subscriber line, as it is not connected (directly) to the telephone exchange.

You need a wireless router if you want to use a wireless connection from your PC to the internet. Sorry.

  5. DSL

    because

    ADSL is for phone line

    and

    DSL is for cable

Basically you connect the Virgin Media Modem and stick the Ethernet in the Modem and the DSL router then you set it up by switching on your computer typing in a Internet browser 192.168.0.2 then set it up from there

  6. You need a cable router I am afraid.
