my I-20 is valid for 2 years but by the time I come back to my home country and apply for a new f-1 visa (the old one will expire soon), it will only be valid for 6 more months, should it be ok with the u.s. consulate? if it is ok, how long will my visa be valid for (the usual one is 1 yr)

  1. Yes, you can apply for a new F1 with your I-20.  Often the visa is issued only for the length of studies, though, so don't be surprised if the visa will expire on the date specified on the I-20.  Remember, too, that a visa is for entry, not for length of stay, so as long as you continue full-time study (say, one more semester or OPT) you will still be in status even if your visa expires.
