The conditions on trenitalia.com says "On board the train, your "Socio" ticket must be shown together with the Cartaviaggio, issued in the name of the traveller, and a valid identification document" but there is no description of what cartaviaggio or socio means. I am an Indian national travelling as a tourist in Italy.

  1. For what its worth, 'socio' means you're a member and a 'Cartaviaggio'  would be a travel ticket or card.  Without know the context in which these words are used, its difficult to say exactly what they mean.  I think you would be better off waiting until you arrive before puchasing tickets.  If you have to wait in line it will be only once, since you can purchase all your tickets or passes at one time.

  2. Hello,

The cartaviaggio is a ticket for Italians who use the train on a regular basis, like getting to and from work in a different city.  You must purchase one of these in order to receive most of the discounts offered by trenitalia.  If you are not an Italian and don't have one of these cards you cannot take advantage of the discount.  Just use the standard fare.
